Patio Season

Patio Season has officially begun. Yesterday and today have been fantastic out and this past week the bars in town have started getting their sidewalk patios ready. Leave it to Halifax to take bar patios to another level. This isn't just a couple of small tables crowding the sidewalk in front of the bars. This is complete military takeover of the sidewalks. Most places build, really build with carpenters and the sort, sidewalks extensions that move out into the street so they can maximize the size of their patios. It transforms pedestrian and car traffic on the streets where there are a lot of bars. I'll throw some photos up when I get a chance.

  1. Boy is this so unlike the Anglo Canada I used to know. It's not even like Toronto in some ways, where there are many less patios than there should be. But back in the day, a patio was a very rare event, to be written up in tourist guides and the like, and touted by the local commerce of chamber as a sign of that their little town was going cosmopolitan, maybe even 'european'.

Used to be, back in the day, if you wanted a drink, you had to have it indoors, preferably in almost pitch darkness, choking on cigarette smoke. If you wanted to sin, you had to sin big . . .

Do you know, btw, that blogger will not let me leave a wordpress tag? So no Cityofstrangers . . . I'm back to the Heygate . . .

  2. It's Halifax. It's a port city. Drinking is a way of life out here. It's encouraged to an unhealthy degree. I went to a bar over the weekend and it was the most packed bar I've been in that wasn;t a dance club since I left Halifax....my liver hurts.

    fuckin wordpress gobshites....8^)

  3. i'll post pix of some of some of the patios. it's ridiculous. parking becomes nonexistent on a couple of streets because of the sidewalk by-passes
